Many tourists who visit the Phong Nha-Ke Bang World Natural Heritage are mesmerized by the stunning landscape of green mountains and blue waters, as well as the magnificent cave system. If you are on a yacht, looking towards the south bank of the Son River, you may notice an old ferry wharf. Even though the trees are dense, you can still clearly see the words engraved on the cliff: "Nguyen Van Troi Ferry Terminal". This is B ferry terminal of the Xuan Son ferry, which is named after the heroic martyr Nguyen Van Troi. This place is also significant as the shoe prints of tens of thousands of soldiers who traveled from the South to the North during the war against the Americans were printed here.

The appearance of Nguyen Van Troi Ferry Terminal
Located near Xuan Son bridge on the current Ho Chi Minh road is Xuan Son Ferry Terminal, which was fiercely attacked and considered a "bomb bag" of the fire zone. In 1966, due to the request for support for the Southern battlefield and the opening of 20 Quyet Thang road connecting East and West Truong Son, the Xuan Son ferry was operated by the Quang Binh Traffic Company. In December 1966, Company 16 of Infantry Station 14 of Group 559 took charge of this ferry. The company consisted of 125 people, including engineering soldiers and volunteer workers, and used canoes and pontoons as their primary vehicles. They mainly operated from 7:00 pm the previous night to 4:00 am the next morning, avoiding enemy aircraft during the day. When not in use, the ferry was disassembled, and the canoes were pulled to take shelter in Phong Nha cave. The cave also served as a storage space for weapons and ammunition at times.
Xuan Son Ferry is situated near Xuan Son Bridge on the current Ho Chi Minh road. It was fiercely attacked and considered a "bomb bag" of the fire zone. In 1966, due to the request for support for the Southern battlefield and the opening of 20 Quyet Thang road connecting East and West Truong Son, the Quang Binh Traffic Company took over the operation of the Xuan Son Ferry. The US Air Force tried every way to bomb and destroy ferries A and B. Particularly at Nguyen Van Troi ferry, in addition to blockbuster bombs, they also dropped many mines and other sophisticated and dangerous slow-explosive bombs. The unit established the "Suicide Team" to regularly clear explosive bombs to clear ferries and traffic. Many comrades have heroically sacrificed their lives on this river, the blood of the soldiers of Company 16 mixed into the red Son River.

Visitors can reach Nguyen Van Troi Ferry Terminal by either motorbike or car. They need to pass Xuan Son bridge and then turn into Xuan Son village along the riverbank to reach the ferry terminal.

However, the heroic and tragic echoes of a time of bullets and bombs still linger. They can be heard within the waves of the Son River that flows past Nguyen Van Troi ferry wharf. To honor the heroic martyrs, army soldiers, and young volunteers who fought and sacrificed to keep the traffic arteries running smoothly for the beloved South, the Nguyen Van Troi ferry wharf relic was erected as a memorial stele. It was recognized by the Ministry of Culture and Information as a National Historical and Cultural Relic according to Decision No. 236/VH-QD dated December 12, 2019.
