Tourist visa is a type of visa issued to tourists coming to Vietnam for sightseeing and tourism (including visa exemption). After the exemption period expires, visitors can apply for an extension of their Vietnam tourist visa according to regulations.

  • The sole purpose of this visa is to allow foreigners to enter Vietnam to visit, relax, and travel. This is not a long-term goal but only temporary. Therefore, the duration of a tourist visa is very short.
  • The 2019 Law states that the duration of a tourist visa is a maximum of 3 months. However, foreign tourists are not allowed to temporarily stay for 3 consecutive months, but they must leave the country once every 1 month (30 days). And if you do not want to leave the country, you must extend your visa.

Visa extension process for foreigners in Vietnam:

  • Step 1: Prepare documents to apply for Vietnam tourist visa extension

• Original passport is still valid according to regulations and must be 1 month longer than the expected extension period
• Original passport with at least 02 blank pages
• Visa extension application form - Form NA5 according to regulations
• Online temporary residence registration or temporary residence registration with the confirmation stamp of the Police Department where the foreign tourist is temporarily residing

  • Step 2: Submit an application to extend Vietnam tourist visa

You will proceed to submit directly to the Immigration Department or the Police agencies of the province/centrally-run city where the foreigner is temporarily residing.
If the application is valid, you will receive an appointment letter to return the results. If the application is not valid, you will receive additional instructions from the receiving officer. Processing time is from 5 to 7 working days.

  • Step 3: Receive the results of Vietnam tourist visa extension according to the date on the appointment paper
